This edition of “Get To Know” your local/underground up and coming artists brings us Castledoor. The briefest history in the world about a band goes as follows: Two of the forming members originally came from Northern California, but grouped together in Los Angeles and started to battle the musical world. In 2006 they put out a self released EP titled Follow The Dove and are currently working on a new record to be released by next year. I could ramble on and on about the history and all that, but let’s be honest, all you care about is if you like the music anyway. So go listen.

I have had a chance to see these fine gentleman and ladies perform live several times. The first time was at the Silverlake Lounge with The Parson Red Heads, and I remember being surprised that not only did they hold my attention, but I genuinely liked the music as well. They have catchy well rounded sounds that you can’t help but get into. The interesting thing I’ve noticed is since I first saw them some months back, they’ve made remarkable progress acquiring attention from the “Silverlake scene”. They currently have a residency on Mondays at The Echo for the month of October. If you didn’t get the memo, Mondays are free there. I keep seeing their name pop up and keep seeing them on good bills and now as the lead singer Nate Cole will tell you below have some good things planned for the future.

Indie Schmarm: Where did you guys come up with the name Castledoor?

Nate Cole: It came from a lyric to a song we wrote a while back, also…I used to have a blog by that name haha.

Indie Schmarm: How did you guys get together?

Nate Cole: Gabe and I first met in our hometowns in northern California in 1997. We ended up moving to L.A. ’cause Gabe’s wife (girlfriend at the time) was going to school there. We met Joel and Brandon through a mutual friend in San Diego. And my wife, Lisa, and Gabe’s wife, Coury, Joined the band in 2006…

Indie Schmarm: I hear you guys are recording a new record with Aaron Espinoza of
Earlimart at The Ship. How’s that going and when can we expect that to
be released?

Nate Cole: When we first started we planned on making another EP, but after finishing that we decided to record some more songs and make a full record. We’re waiting for Aaron to come back from tour to finish up, but so far so good! Hopefully we’ll be finished by Christmas and get a sweet ass record deal and put it out by spring of 2008.

Indie Schmarm: What is your writing process like? Do you guys have a main song
writer or is it more of a collaborative effort?

Nate Cole:The song typically starts with an idea that I have and then bring to the band. Gabe and I are probably the primary song writers but the rest of the band really make it work.

Indie Schmarm: What are some of your favorite bands currently?

Nate Cole: Recently I’ve been listening to the Arcade Fire, Beirut, Leonard Cohen, and Papercuts.
